Things to Do in Pleasant Hill: Movies, Farm Fun, Gardening, Rodeo and Live Music
There are still plenty of reasons to get out of the house in Pleasant Hill this week. A movie classic is coming to the big screen, families can spend an afternoon exploring a local farm school, gardeners can learn a few tricks about their irises, and next weekend brings both rodeo action and live music to town.
The week kicks off Friday, Aug. 7, at the historic Peoples Theater with a free showing of Field of Dreams. Sponsored by the Republican Club of Pleasant Hill, the summer movie night is an opportunity to see the 1989 baseball favorite on the big screen. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the movie beginning at 7 p.m. Hot dogs, popcorn and other concessions will be available, and organizers are encouraging moviegoers to arrive early. The Peoples Theater is located at 110 Veterans Parkway.
On Sunday, Aug. 9, families can trade the movie theater for the outdoors during the THF Farm School Open House & Discovery Day. From 1 to 5 p.m., visitors can explore the urban farm at 905 Lexington Road, meet rabbits, quail and farm kittens, and get a look at the school’s nature-based approach to learning.
The afternoon will include sample curriculum, nature journals and student projects, along with tours of the farm school and its future outdoor learning spaces. Children can participate in a nature craft while parents learn more about programs available for ages 3 through 18. Homemade lemonade and herbal tea will also be served. The event is free, and families are encouraged to RSVP through the Facebook event so organizers can prepare enough refreshments and craft supplies. Gardeners get their turn the following weekend when Paula’s Petals Greenhouse & Floral offers its free All About Iris class on both Friday, Aug. 14, and Saturday, Aug. 15. The approximately one-hour class begins at 8 a.m. each day and will cover planting and growing irises as well as the proper way to dig and divide established plants.
The classes will be held at Paula’s Petals, 33607 E. 199th St., using the second entrance off the main road. Registration is encouraged. For more information, contact Paula McCloskey at 816-929-0522.
By Saturday evening, Aug. 15, things get a little louder. Midwest Roughstock returns to the Cass County Fairgrounds at 7 p.m. as part of its 2026 We’re Back Tour. The evening will feature rodeo action along with vendors, food and family entertainment.
For those who would rather spend Saturday night listening to music, Brass Rewind will be performing at the Big Creek Opry at the Peoples Theater in downtown Pleasant Hill.
And those aren’t the only things happening around town. Regular activities continue throughout the month, including Wing Hill Wine Co.’s free wine tastings, the VFW Post 3118 Community Breakfast, Pleasant Hill Cruise Nights, Grace Place Diaper Day, the Pleasant Hill Farmers Market and Super Seniors.
